SA: McEwen sworn in as new SA goverment minister
ADELAIDE, Dec 4 AAP - An independent MP was today sworn in as the South AustralianLabor government's newest minister.
Rory McEwen became the Labor government's 14th minister, taking on the portfolios oftrade, regional affairs and local government.
Mr McEwen's elevation to the cabinet gives the Labor administration a majority in thelower house of parliament after previously relying on the support of controversial independentMP and speaker Peter Lewis.
Mr McEwen was sworn in at a ceremony at Government House today following parliamentagreeing last week to amend the Constitution Act to allow an extra minister.
After the February state election, Labor held 23 and the Liberal Party held 20 of the47 Lower House seats with one held by the National Party.
Mr Lewis and fellow independent Bob Such declared they would not vote against Laboron confidence and supply issues.
Mr McEwen has signed a special agreement with the minority government in a move whichwill ensure the passage of its legislative program.
